When I'm not tutoring, I'm either writing, editing, or running. I've written one
memoir and I'm working on a second one. The first is currently being considered by
two agents and one publisher.
I've edited several novels, a memoir, an nonfiction book, a children's book, and many
short pieces.
I've completed thirty-four marathons in twenty-three states. If I live long
enough and continue to be blessed with the ability to do so, I hope to run a marathon in
every state.
Here are brief descriptions of my writing projects.
The Daydream
My first memoir, The Daydream, recounts my early marriage to a binge drinker
whose abusiveness increased in frequency and severity. Even after several harrowing
experiences, I still felt the duty to honor my wedding vows.
Two children later, living in a broken-down trailer parked in a cow pasture, I felt
myself drowning in despair. Fearing the loss of my sanity, I sought counseling, through
which I transformed despair into anger, and anger into determination. Determination alone
couldn't lead me out of my abysmal situation, but I came to believe that education
could.
I plan to post the first few chapters here soon. This manuscript is currently
being considered by an agent, two publishers, and a screenwriter.
The View from the Back...of the Pack
I started running in 1978, when I was in my early thirties, only intending to run two
miles three times a week. Little did I dream that ten years later, a friend would
persuade me to enter a road race. Even after that, I couldn't imagine running more
than six miles (a 10K). But now in 2006, I've completed numerous events of distances
from 5K to the marathon (26.2 miles). I've finished a marathon in seventeen states
so far, with the hope of completing a marathon in every state.
Because I didn't become a distance runner until relatively late in life, and because
I'm a slow runner, I have a unique perspective on training and running long
distances. When I began to lead marathon training groups, I realized how much I've
learned about training, and how the older, slower runner trains differently from the
younger and/or faster runner.
I've started writing about my running life, from the first attempt to run a mile to
running a thirty-mile training run.
